Steven Gerrard in frame for Glasgow Rangers return after Martin is dismissed.
The former Rangers boss is under serious review for a surprise reappointment to Ibrox following the official dismissal of manager the ex-Swansea boss.
Martin's unfortunate spell at Rangers ends
Martin's troubled period in Glasgow finished with the boss leaving the Falkirk Stadium via a back exit and a waiting car after a level finish which left Rangers eleven points adrift from the peak of the Scottish Premiership after just seven games.
Furious supporters had encircled the club coach in Falkirk, showing their discontent.
Club hierarchy hesitant to let go of Martin
The Ibrox hierarchy had been unwilling to part with Martin, who was only hired in the summer, despite strong complaints from the fanbase.
However, there was an realization that the manager's position had become untenable.
Rangers have won only one of their Premiership matches to date, which has been coupled with disappointing showings on the continental stage.
Collectively, the coach won only five of 17 fixtures, with a uninspiring, muddled brand of football that earned him few friends.
“While all transition periods take a while, outcomes have not met the team's standards,” said a club announcement on the weekend.
“Deputy manager the assistant, and first-team coach Mike Williamson, will also be moving on. Martin and his staff have given their all throughout their tenure. We thank them for their dedication and send best wishes for the time ahead.”
Gerrard secured the championship with Rangers
The former England captain claimed the league with Rangers in 2020-21, their lone triumph since that year.
His performance in Glasgow before then, combined with difficulties at Villa, raises questions about his managerial capabilities.
Yet he is held in high esteem by the very group of supporters the club desperately need back on side.
The rehiring of the Anfield legend, who last managed in Saudi Arabia, would prove hugely popular.
The manager will also be mindful of what limited opportunities he has to be a gaffer in significant leagues.
The departure will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell
The manager's departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.
He had been hugely supportive of the coach while publicly revealing a transfer outlay of £20m in the summer window.
Martin had put pen to paper on a long-term deal.
His past roles
Martin, who had formerly managed the League One side and Swansea, managed the south coast club to elevation to the English football's elite in the previous season after being brought in the earlier window.
He was let go last winter after the the club managed only one win of their initial 16 matches.
He was named the interim boss's next in line in June, after the temporary manager had replaced the fired Philippe Clement in February.
