South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Visits Oregon ICE Facility With Right-Wing Figures

The South Dakota governor, acting as the homeland security secretary, inspected the federal immigration enforcement facility in the city of Portland on this week. On site, she saw firsthand a modest demonstration outside, which stands in stark contrast to the intense "blockade" alleged by former President Donald Trump.

Accompanied by Conservative Influencers

Governor Noem was joined by a set of MAGA-aligned personalities who were driven from the Portland airport to the site in her official convoy. The Department of Homeland Security has shared increasingly belligerent online posts featuring federal personnel carrying out immigration raids and deploying crowd control measures at protesters.

Gathering Outside

Officers established a perimeter outside the ICE office in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the secretary’s visit. Several demonstrators, including one dressed as a fowl and another as a shark, were maintained behind barriers.

A song was audible from a demonstration site down the street, with words about Trump and allegations. A demonstrator yelled to a official camera operator recording from the facility's roof, challenging whether the Department of Homeland Security had been dubbed the "propaganda department".

Media Access

Members of the press from nonpartisan media organizations were also held behind the barrier outside, while the MAGA-aligned figures in her party—the conservative trio—posted online posts of the governor leading federal officers in prayer inside, giving a motivational speech, and advising a soldier of the Oregon National Guard to "Prepare".

Recent Rulings

Governor Noem has previously echoed the former president's assertions that the group of individuals—who have gathered in their limited groups outside the office since June, including one in an amphibian suit—are "radicals" who have placed the building "besieged", making the use of government forces essential.

But, on a recent weekend, a U.S. judge in Portland prevented the former president's effort to bring under federal control local militia, determining that the president’s claims that the mostly calm city was "in flames" were "not based on reality".

The next day, the court official, Karin Immergut—who was selected to the bench by Trump—extended the decision to prevent guard members from other states from being deployed in Oregon. This occurred after the former president responded to her initial ruling by seeking to use members of the another state's militia to Oregon.

Rising Conflicts

After Trump drew attention the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the site and made inaccurate statements that the city is "war ravaged", a increasing amount of his adherents, including MAGA influencers, have arrived to face the individuals.

A number of these confrontations have led to scuffles and fistfights, leading to apprehensions by the local law enforcement. Nick Sortor was taken into custody after he sought to enter a protest encampment on a sidewalk near the site and was part of an altercation over an U.S. flag. He had previously taken the flag from a demonstrator who was destroying it.

The charges against the influencer were eventually dismissed after an outcry in conservative media prompted the leader of the legal unit of the Department of Justice, Harmeet Dhillon, to suggest a review of the law enforcement agency over supposed partisan treatment.

Female protesters he was involved in an altercation with still face charges.

Authorities' Comments

Recently, the state's governor, she, accused federal officers in the site of trying to irritate the crowds by using excessive quantities of chemical irritants in a residential neighborhood and including right-wing personalities to record the protesters from the roof of the facility. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," Kotek said.

Three of those conservative influencers were referred to in a official record last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "constantly return and provoke the individuals until they are confronted or pepper sprayed" and resist "frequent warnings from officers to stay away from" the demonstrators.

Online Content

One influencer, a former journalist who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being fired from a media outlet for plagiarism, shared video of the secretary viewing from the roof of the office at the handful of demonstrators below, including Jack Dickinson who dons a chicken costume to ridicule Donald Trump. The influencer labeled the video of Noem observing the peaceful setting below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

In spite of the contrast between the allegations from both officials that this ICE field office is "encircled" from "homegrown extremists" and clear visual evidence of a handful of demonstrators in non-threatening attire, the figures with Noem continued to refer to the demonstrators as threatening extremists.

Discussion with Law Enforcement

During her visit, the secretary also met with the city's top cop, the chief, who has been depicted as "woke" in conservative media for allowing his law enforcement to apprehend Sortor. In a social media update on the meeting, Johnson asserted that the official had "supported violent ANTIFA militants assaulting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then exited the facility past a few of demonstrators on the nearby road, including one dressed as a animal wearing a headgear.
