Snoopy Completely Evolved Throughout the Peanuts 50-Year Journey — Sometimes Deliberately

An illustrator isn't always in full control regarding their figures. The sketching tool can tremble and wobble and zig instead of zag — regularity remains an aspiration, not a guarantee. And a truly lively figure will eventually lead the creator, rather than the reverse. This was consistently how Peanuts cartoonist Schulz described why Snoopy, his energetic brainchild, developed starting with his first appearance in 1950 and his final strip showings in 2000.

“When my artistic approach loosened, Snoopy could to do more things,” Schulz said during the mid-1970s. “And when I eventually established the technique of employing his creativity to dream of being numerous brave personas, the strip took on an entirely fresh perspective."

Tracking the progression of Snoopy’s design and individual nature might seem tedious across Peanuts collections, yet, luckily for cartoon lovers, it’s about to get slightly more manageable. Scheduled for the 75th anniversary of Schulz’s strip, The Definitive Peanuts stands as a premium slipcased coffee table volume crafted by celebrated scribe Evanier which selects the most recognizable Peanuts strips and frames them with fresh historical and cultural context. Designed by the designer Kidd, the publication contains a foreword by Schulz's wife, an introduction by Mutts illustrator McDonnell, along with contributions from sixteen distinguished voices (featuring a cosmonaut admirer of the beagle). Included in the set are several keepsakes, including postcards, prints, a stitched emblem, labels, plus a replica original strip compilation.

Expanding upon the publisher's praised Peanuts series, this dedicated volume delves into the artist's artistic drive and the strip’s lasting impact in various creative fields, writing, and common experiences. The final product highlights the way Peanuts has crossed age groups, and transformed into a more significant entity than its creator might ever assign to his initial concept.

Underneath, you’ll find special excerpts from The Essential Peanuts, particularly examining the beagle's evolution in the beginning stages.

Within his notes, featured in the book, Evanier emphasizes that every one of the comic's personas eventually changed by ongoing iteration and exploration, using Snoopy as the standout case. By the late 1950s, the character had evolved taller and increasingly imaginative, transforming into all sorts of animals to alter egos such as Joe Cool. It’s a gorgeous depiction of a craft which has faded with the print media fades, but clearly deserves a spot in the records of visual-art history.

The Essential Peanuts, costing $75, arrives in bookstores this October.
