The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was set to be a candidate among three standing for the Irish presidency, alongside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, late Sunday he announced through a declaration that he "committed an error which did not align with his character and the standards I set myself."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to leave the election for president immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he declared in his announcement.
