Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped the Modern Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title belongs to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks working for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical saw, that turned timber into boards using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch maritime, economic as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s first authentic industrial machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part converted the rotary movement into up-and-down action to power the saw. Another component transformed the rotary motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the log toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each downward stroke and advancing on every upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental components.”
